Artist Anthony James was born and raised in St Clair Shores, Michigan and plans to live there for the rest of his life. Anthony states " I love the state of Michigan; it has so much to offer." For 20 years of his early adult life he was fraught with many personal trials and tribulations, he turned to the Bible in order to find peace and understanding in his life. He also turned to art as a means of expressing himself, he has always loved art from an early age since his first visit to the Detroit Institute of Arts as a young boy. It seemed a natural course to follow to combine his spiritual studies with his love of art. "As I would read a particular passage, images would come to mind which I would then create into a work of art. All my works are based on New Testament text."
Today Anthony is widowed and lives alone. He maintains his studio in his home town where he is close to family and friends. While he creates works of art in many different genre's and styles he is currently working on a new series of inspirational art using found and acquired objects such as stone, glass, metal and fabric." I'm totally loosening the bounds of my creative process and am happy to share my art with others as I try to live the life of harmlessness that Jesus taught us."
Anthony is a self-taught artist and his lessons in art, as in life, never cease as he is continually learning . He can name off many artists throughout history who has inspired him, but names only one in particular: Vincent VanGogh; "I believe the reason he was not well received as an artist during his life was simply because he was ahead of his time; his style of art, which was very expressionistic, was butting heads with the Impressionist movement." Anthony has studied many artist from early history to present day and he believes that what draws him most to art is the act of creating and the sense of accomplishment when creating something of a positive and affirmative nature, especially if it has deep significance. He has won awards, notably at the University of Michigan juried art shows where he was honored with 1st place three consecutive years. Many of his works are hanging in private and corporate collections.
